The Minor Suspects:
Dehydration and Ethanal Formation
In the earlier post, we learnt about the process undergone after consuming alcohol.
We could then observe closer the first two minor suspects of hangover: alcohol’s diuretic effect and the formation of Ethanal.
Consuming alcohol will reduce the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) resulting in the increase of urination. This is also known as an alcohol induced dehydration, which has been suggested as one of a minor factor of hangover.
On top of that, the production of Ethanal or acetaldehyde comes with toxic effects which lead to hangover symptoms as well. Nevertheless, the correlation between its concentration and hangover severity is not significant.
